Children and Youth with Special Health Care Needs (CYSHCN) Subgroup

We will engage caregivers and healthcare providers of CYSHCN to identify and address barriers CYSHCN face in receiving dental care early and often.

  • Expand dental services for children with special health care needs (CYSHCN), particularly those in communities with the highest oral health burden.

We will identify the CYSHCN population that requires special dental care, and the barriers they face in receiving dental care.

  • We will develop a plan to address several barriers and which CYSHCN require special dental care.

  • We will develop and implement a centralized system to track dental status for CYSHCN who require specialized dental care and coordinate dental care.

  • We will identify dental providers and RDHAPs who are interested in serving CYSHCN and provide them with technical assistance, training, and support to enable both office special dental care as well as virtual dentistry.

  • We will partner with dental schools to incorporate more curricular content on CYSHCN in pre- doctoral programs, and care provision for CYSHCN in postgraduate residency programs.
